Course Information.
I recently made my first visit to Atalaya Golf and Country Club and
what an eye-opener it proved to be. I was planning to play 9 holes and
catch the full English breakfast served in the clubhouse, but after
an enjoyable nine holes on the Old course, I carried on and finished
the round. Atalaya has had its critics in the past, but I genuinely
found both courses great value, especially when you consider the discount
green fee rates on offer.
First opened back in 1968, the Atalaya Old Course has featured various
revamps, including the reseeding of fairways with Bermuda grass. Thankfully
for me the course has wide fairways and generously sized elevated greens.
Most of the fairways are lined with Eucalyptus, Olive and Pine trees,
dealing out a fair punishment for those wild shots.
Atalaya Golf & Country Club has also invested on a variety of tee
positions to ensure all golfers can enjoy the course (even if most golfers
still insist on playing off the back tees). After an excellent lunch
in the charming Swiss chalet clubhouse, I finished the day with 9 holes
on the New course.
"If you are looking for a good course at a reasonable green fee
rate, it will be hard to beat."
Opened in 1990, the new course has to meet the high requirements of
the PGAE (Professional Golfers Association Europe) for playing condition
and layout. I met Lawrence Thorton (general secretary PGAE) after the
game and he is full of praise for the way that the hotel and golf course
have improved over the last few years and how they are changing their
attitude towards visiting golfers.
I enjoyed my day at the Atalaya Golf & Country Club and if you
are looking for a good course at a reasonable green fee rate, it will
be hard to beat.
