Course Information.
Alto Golf is situated near the picturesque village of Alvor. Extraordinary
white sandy beaches, a clear blue sea and fascinating cliffs are all
part of its charm. It embodies the belief of its architect Sir Henry
Cotton that a golf course should not only test players with low handicaps,
but also provide a pleasant game for golfers of only average level.
After his death, the project was continued by Peter Dobereiner.
"Extraordinary white sandy beaches, a clear blue sea and fascinating
cliffs"
The course runs through two valleys, offering players winding fairways
and undulating greens, and, on the first nine holes, they have the added
pleasure of an excellent view over Lagos Bay. The last nine holes run
through gentle mountain slopes and include hole number 16, said to be
one of the longest holes in Europe: a 604-metre par 5 that has been
given the name of "The Giant". Any player who manages a birdie
here will receive a certificate and his or her name will be inscribed
on the club's roll of honour.
"My philosophy when designing a golf course is that the course
should be testing for low handicap players, but also provide an enjoyable
game for the ordinary club player. Alto Golf meets these two criteria
admirably." Sir Henry Cotton.
