A Golfers Guide to Central Algarve.

The Central Algarve contains the resorts of Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. It covers 4,000 acres and includes five golf courses, tennis courts, a riding school, fishing and shooting facilities, and indoor and outdoor sports complexes. The focal point is the large marina, which is fronted by some very good restaurants, cafes and shops. The nightlife is lively, cosmopolitan and varied with a great mix of bars, clubs and restaurants. We recommend you head for the ones in the marina.

A Golfers Guide to East Algarve.

Most courses in the Algarve lie to the west of Faro, but in the Eastern Algarve, near the Spanish border, we found an area that is very different, both in terms of environment and golfing attractions. This area is an excellent choice for golf breaks in Portugal.

Tavira is a much less touristy place and is part of one of Portugal’s most important nature reserves. It’s quiet, has a rugged landscape and a unique beauty that we loved. As a resort destination for golf breaks in Portugal, it has emerged as a new alternative in the Algarve over the last couple of years. The courses have been well thought out, and a number of good hotels are now only a short distance from the airport.

We also like to take the trip just over the border into Spain. The province of Huelva on the Costa de la Luz offers the chance to play some great golf courses on both sides of the border.

A Golfers Guide to West Algarve.

For a golfing holiday in Portugal the Western Algarve is a mixture of the traditional and the modern, from the lovely old towns of Lagos, Alvor and Portimao to the tourist hotspots of Albufeira.

Moving down the coast you come to Praia do Carvoeiro, which is usually known just as Carvoeiro nowadays. Despite its popularity, it has managed to avoid the tower block syndrome, spreading sideways rather than upwards. Suburbs of good quality villas have been built to the east and west of the village.

Portimao is not renowned for its beauty but it has plenty of character and a long history as a port. We always enjoy shopping here, particularly in the Rua do Comercio. If you've never tried fresh sardines, Portimao is the place to do it. It's still a lively fishing port and the fish are just great.

Lagos is set on one of the largest bays in the Algarve and is an attractive, bustling town. A squat, 17th century fort and tumbledown walls guard the harbour entrance, providing an exciting mix of old and new Portugal. We recommend strolling around the town’s many classic flower decked squares and whitewashed buildings, and exploring the new marina and rows of excellent restaurants and bars.
